How To Make Katti Parippukerala Parippu Curry

– Welcome to Anu’s Kitchen, where we explore the flavors of Kerala cuisine.
– Today, we are going to learn how to make the traditional Katti Parippu or Kerala Parippu Curry.
– This simple and flavorful dish is a staple in Malayali households and is perfect for a comforting meal.

Ingredients:
– 1 cup of Toor dal (split pigeon peas)
– 2 cups of water
– 1 tsp of turmeric powder
– 1 tsp of salt
– 2-3 green chilies, slit
– 1 sprig of curry leaves
– 1 small piece of ginger, chopped
– 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds
– 2-3 dry red chilies
– 2 tbsp of coconut oil
– 1/2 tsp of cumin seeds
– 2 shallots, thinly sliced
– 2 cloves of garlic, chopped
– 1/2 cup of grated coconut

Recipe:
1. Rinse the toor dal under running water until the water runs clear.
2. In a pressure cooker, add the toor dal, water, turmeric powder, salt, green chilies, curry leaves, and ginger.
3. Pressure cook for 2-3 whistles or until the dal is cooked and mushy. Set aside.
4. In a pan, heat coconut oil and add mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add cumin seeds, dry red chilies, shallots, and garlic.
5. Saute until the shallots turn golden brown.
6. Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix well. Let it simmer for a few minutes.
7. In a separate pan, dry roast the grated coconut until it turns golden brown.
8. Add the roasted coconut to the dal mixture and stir well.
9. Let the curry simmer for another 5 minutes.
10. Garnish with a drizzle of coconut oil and a few curry leaves.
