– 1 tsp cumin seeds
– 2-3 dry red chilies
– 8-10 curry leaves
– 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 inch ginger, finely chopped
– 2-3 green chilies, slit
– 1/4 tsp asafoetida

1. Rinse the toor dal thoroughly and drain the water. In a pressure cooker, add the dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 4-5 whistles or until the dal is soft and mushy.

3. In a separate pan, heat ghee over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add dry red chilies, curry leaves, garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Sauté until the garlic turns golden brown.
4. Add asafoetida and red chili powder. Mix well and pour this tempering over the cooked dal. Stir to combine the flavors.
5. Simmer the dal for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Adjust the seasoning if required.
